Can You Work During TMS Treatment?
Quick Answer
Yes. TMS involves no sedation, no medication, and no recovery time, so most patients at Bluebird TMS work a normal schedule through the entire course. The only real demand is the calendar — daily weekday sessions over several weeks — which is why our Denver Tech Center clinic books fixed slots before work, at lunch, or at the end of the day. You can drive yourself, you do not need to disclose anything to your employer beyond a recurring appointment, and side effects rarely interfere with the workday.
What TMS does not do
It does not sedate you, impair your judgment, or require a ride. It does not change your medications unless your psychiatrist decides to. It does not leave you unable to concentrate afterward. Patients walk out of a session and into a meeting. If you have read about the ride-home requirement, that applies to SPRAVATO® and ketamine therapy, not to TMS.
What it does take
Time, consistently. See the treatment schedule for the shape of a course and how long a session takes for the minutes. A standard session plus the walk in and out fits a one-hour lunch; theta-burst (iTBS) sessions are shorter still. The patients who finish on schedule are the ones who pick a slot and treat it like a standing meeting.
Side effects at work
Scalp discomfort at the treatment site and a headache are the most common, mostly in the first week, and they usually fade. A small number of patients feel more tired than usual early in the course. None of this is disabling, and your psychiatrist will tell you if anything about your situation suggests otherwise.
What to tell your employer
Nothing is required. A recurring appointment is a recurring appointment. If you choose to use leave, whether intermittent leave applies depends on your employer's policies and your circumstances; our team provides whatever documentation HR requests, and HR is the right place to settle the details.
Jobs with special considerations
Safety-sensitive roles, shift work, and travel-heavy positions are worth raising at the consultation. The usual answer is scheduling, not exclusion; for travel, accelerated iTBS can compress the course into fewer days for eligible patients.
