The Real Time Commitment of TMS
Quick Answer
A standard course of TMS is daily weekday sessions over several weeks; each session runs roughly 20 to 40 minutes, or a few minutes for theta-burst (iTBS). Add travel and check-in and the realistic daily commitment is about an hour, five days a week, for the length of the course. Accelerated iTBS compresses that into days or a couple of weeks for eligible patients. At Bluebird TMS the point of the Tech Center location is that the hour comes out of a lunch break or the edges of the workday, not out of a job.
The arithmetic, honestly
- Session: 20 to 40 minutes standard; about three to ten minutes iTBS. See session length.
- Door to door: add your drive or walk and a few minutes to check in and get seated.
- Days: five per week during the main course.
- Weeks: several for a standard course, often with a taper at the end. See the treatment schedule.
- First visit: roughly an hour, because mapping sets your treatment spot and dose.
What does not cost time
Recovery (none), a driver (none), fasting or prep (none), and paperwork after day one (none). The insurance authorization is done by our team before the first session, not by you during the course. Most patients keep working throughout; see working during TMS.
The accelerated alternative
For eligible patients, accelerated iTBS schedules several short sessions in one day with rest periods between, so the course finishes in days or a couple of weeks rather than six or more. It trades a few longer days for many short ones. Whether it is right for you is a clinical decision made with your psychiatrist, and the standard course is sometimes the better choice.
How to plan it
Pick one slot you can hold for the whole course and protect it like a standing meeting. Put the end date on your calendar. Tell the clinic about travel or a deadline before you start so the schedule can be built around it rather than broken by it. The patients who finish on time are the ones who planned the calendar, not the ones who hoped.
FAQ
How many hours total is a course of TMS?
Roughly an hour a day door to door, five days a week, for the length of a standard course of several weeks. Accelerated iTBS compresses the calendar for eligible patients.
Can I take a week off mid-course?
Tell the clinic before you start. Short gaps are managed within a course; longer gaps may change the plan, and your psychiatrist will advise.
Is accelerated TMS less total time?
It is fewer calendar days with multiple short sessions per day. Whether it suits you is decided with your psychiatrist, not by convenience alone.
Do follow-ups take time after the course?
Follow-up visits are periodic and most can be done by video; your psychiatrist sets the plan before the course ends.
